Charlotte Wedding Photographer | Mountainside Engagement

Is there a better time for an engagement session other than sunset? I think not. I mean in all honestly I think any and all outdoor sessions should be taken at sunset but that's just me.

At sunset, the light is warm and romantic and the golden glow gives everyone's face that candlelit look. Golden hour can truly transform a cow pasture full of poop into a magical backdrop. While I have my favorite go-to spots for good light in the Charlotte area, I also periodically will travel to the mountains too. (Trust me, I love a good mountain scenery)

Funny enough, this couple kept saying how unphotogenic they were and how awkward they are in front of the camera. Which believe it or not, most of my couples feel this same way. Most people, unless you are some goddess or a professional model, are uncomfortable in front of the camera. As a professional photographer, I know what to do to loosen you up, get good angles and photograph you that compliments you in the best way that I can.

Let's be honest, do you think they just naturally started dancing on the side of the mountain by themselves? Why of course not. I told them where I wanted them and directed them to start dancing (which to them felt awkward but as you can see, it resulted in smiles and made for gorgeous images.)

Which again, is why its' important to make sure you choose the right photographer. You want a photographer that will guide you and give you things to do during your session so it feels natural for starters and so you aren't left with boring images.

Why should you get engagement photos taken anyways?

People use engagement photos for social media, to print and display around your house, or as announcements for save the dates. Even if you decide you never want to print them or use them anywhere (which is just silly), I still highly encourage you to do so.

Not only does it allow you and your photographer to get to know each other before the wedding (this is super important if they are photographing your wedding), it allows you to also practice what it feels like being in front of a camera. Many couples have never had a formal photo shoot prior to their engagement session so what better way to get out of your comfort zone than with an engagement session.

Luckily, these two are comfortable with me since we are all friends. They understand my humor and are accustomed to my crazy ideas.

So if you are engaged, grab your favorite photographer, go get your hair and make up done (which again this is an awesome way to do a trial run for your wedding day hair and makeup) and go find a gorgeous backdrop to celebrate and capture your engagement.
